The flip flop. In this season of the flip flop caudated one candidate has remained true to his beliefs. We may have vehemently opposed some of his positions but he has stuck to his beliefs. That candidate is John McCain. I know that that will cause the alarms to go off everywhere but when you look at it you will find that it is true. This may be why McCain has started a small but growing comeback in the polls.
To look at everything would be a chore but there are key issues that have beleaguered the candidates. Those who have not been accused of character and flip flop issues either have shown great Character or have run a vanilla campaign that just will not take off.
The first big issue is the right to life issue. Both Gulliani and Romney have serious explaining to do on this issue. Both have run past campaigns in favor of the "right to choose" and are now saying they are for right to life. At least Gulliani has artfully used the its the law and I will uphold the law defense. That defense plays well until you start talking about Supreme Court Judges and then it falls apart. Romney on the other hand has a political expediency to his flip. When it did good to be for abortion he was ok with it and now that it is not helpful to be for the right to choose he is not ok with it. there may be good explanations as to why they have changed but there is still the essence of the flip flop that raises questions.
The next issue is foreign policy. Huckabee has been against the war, and his foreign policy is stolen from a newspaper article. this may be a case where he is not flip flopping but is just plain inadequate.
Next is the tax issue. This is a clear case of I'm for the fair tax as long as I can still raise them. Ask the people of Arkansas. They felt the brunt of the tax increases while Huckabee continually raised them. The argument is that Arkansas was so far behind you had to raise taxes. hat a crock not only is that a poor excuse the results show it was money poorly spent. But now we are to believe he is for fair taxes and lower taxes. Not only do actions speak louder than words but his social agenda will not allow for lessening spending, the two can't coexist.
I haven't talked about Fred Thompson just because his run for the white house has been a Griswald adventure minus the laughs. If he didn't want to run he shouldn't have run. Instead he sucks up money that could go to a better candidate.
Last is McCain who has stayed pretty much on task for his career. I know he has made so many conservatives mad but I think if you take a look at everything he stands for he is the candidate that comes closest to all our values.
Immigration. McCains foreign policy closely resembles President Bush's plan. I'm with the rest of the country. We all want the boarders secured 1st and then we can talk about everything else later. We are arguing how to tackle the immigration issues with him not should we do anything and McCain is up for suggestions. No flip Flop there.
The right to life. McCain has always stood strong for the right to life. No flip Flop there.
Campaign finance reform. As conservatives we all want it. What we argue about is how to do it. I disagree totally with McCain's approach but again it comes to how to accomplish it. As much as you may want to Hate McCain for it, President Bush is just as culpable for not vetoing it. No flip flop there.
Gang of 12. Made me very mad at the time, but I am glad that the changes that would have come into effect with the nuclear option are not available for the Democrat Congress. No flip flop there.
Taxes- words and votes have always been on the conservative side of the issue. No flip flop there.
War- not only supported but was the first to call Bush's approach wrong and that we needed more troops on the ground. Not only right but no flip flop there.
I don't know but I'm beginning to see that McCain can be trusted to say what he means and stick by it. Some things we will disagree on and we will have to fight as we have against certain SCJ appointments or immigration but again the fight will be over the best approach to take not keeping things from being rammed down our throat as the Democrats will try and do. And we will not have to wonder if we are going to be sold out like the Dubai Ports deal or the Education bill.
Just food for thought.
